The CONTACTDB domain serves predominantly the many Web applications. There are two categories of accounts on this domain: user-generated accounts (created in self-serve mode) and administratively-assigned accounts. Both categories have access to the same procedures for account resets and password changes. They differ only at the high level access privileges. Each time a user signs on, some statistics about the account are flashed on the screen. One very important statistc is information about the amount of time left before the password expires. As the expiry date nears — starting at four weeks before it — the sign-on screen pauses to help the user take note of the impending expiry of the password. If at sign-on an incorrect password is entered three times in a row, the account becomes locked out and must be reset using the Account Reset procedure outlined further below. User passwords are never stored in plain text; they are irreversibly scrambled and only a digest key is stored. Our Operators can not "recover" forgotten passwords.
